On Maitland Road · Step-free entry
A tooth that has become infected inside can usually be saved rather than pulled. Root canal treatment clears the infection out of the tooth, settles the pain, and aims to keep the tooth doing its job. We provide it on Maitland Road for patients across Mayfield, Waratah, Islington and the inner-city suburbs.
In pain today? Tell reception it is a dental emergency. Same-day care at Mayfield is subject to availability and clinical urgency. We are open Monday to Friday and closed Saturday.
Mayfield · your written estimate
Itemised, in writing, and handed to you at the assessment — before you consent to anything.
We do not publish a set price, because the cost depends on the tooth. A crown, where we recommend one, is quoted separately and planned in from the outset.
Preferred provider for HCF and CBHS. All health funds welcome, and the smile.com.au dental plan is accepted.
01Straight answers
The five things people ask before they book. Each answer is on the page as it loads, so you do not have to open anything to read it.
Root canal treatment in Mayfield is provided at Mayfield Dental Care, 181 Maitland Road, Mayfield NSW 2304, just down from the Stag and Hunter Hotel and a short walk from Greater Bank and Newcastle Permanent. Phone (02) 4023 3885. Open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.30pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
It is the removal of infected or inflamed pulp from the hollow centre of a tooth, followed by disinfection, shaping and sealing of the canal system so bacteria cannot return. The outer tooth stays where it is. Dentists refer to it as endodontic treatment.
Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth before anything starts, and your dentist confirms it is numb before proceeding. The pain people associate with root canals is usually the toothache beforehand. Expect some tenderness for a few days afterwards, easing as healing progresses.
Commonly two to three visits of 45 to 90 minutes, with two further visits to prepare and fit a crown on a back tooth. Some single-canal front teeth are completed in one longer appointment. Your written plan gives the expected number before treatment starts.
Yes. Mayfield Dental Care has ramp access at the main door, so entry is step-free from Maitland Road. If you have any difficulty reaching us or need assistance on arrival, telephone (02) 4023 3885 before your appointment and we will arrange it.

✓Getting in
There is ramp access at the main door and a bus stop directly out the front, which matters when a course of treatment means several visits rather than one. Telephone ahead if you would like assistance on arrival or a longer appointment time.

02The problem
Beneath the enamel and dentine, every tooth is hollow. That hollow core holds the pulp: nerve tissue, blood vessels and connective tissue running from the crown down narrow channels to the tip of each root. Those channels are the root canals.
Pulp is living tissue sealed inside a rigid chamber, which is why it behaves differently from tissue elsewhere in the body. When bacteria reach it through decay, a crack, a knock or a leaking old filling, the pulp inflames. It cannot swell outwards, so pressure builds against the nerve and the tooth aches. It also cannot heal, because the immune system has almost no access to it.
The pulp then dies. This is the point at which the pain often stops and patients assume the problem has passed. What has actually happened is that the tooth has become a sealed container of bacteria. Those bacteria eventually exit through the root tip into the jawbone, where they form an abscess and destroy bone around the root.
Root canal treatment empties that container, disinfects it and seals it. That is the whole principle, and it is why the treatment resolves the pain rather than merely masking it.
03Causes and prevention
Four causes account for most of the root canal treatment we carry out. Knowing which applies to you tends to change what happens next.
The most common cause by some margin. A cavity left untreated eventually works through to the core. Six-monthly examinations and X-rays exist precisely to catch decay while a filling is still sufficient.
Large fillings placed decades ago can leak at the margins, letting bacteria track underneath while the tooth looks intact from above. Older restorations warrant checking rather than assuming.
A knock to a front tooth can kill the pulp without breaking the tooth, and the consequence may not appear for years. If you have ever had a significant impact to a front tooth, mention it, particularly if that tooth now looks greyer than its neighbours.
A custom-fitted mouthguard for contact sport is the single most effective preventive step here.
Sustained clenching and grinding propagate small cracks through a tooth until one reaches the pulp. If you wake with a sore jaw or your partner reports grinding, raise it at your next appointment.
04Your first appointment
The first appointment is diagnostic, and our aim is to relieve pain quickly. Nothing proceeds without your written estimate and your consent, and where it is clinically appropriate treatment can begin the same day.
● Step 1 of 5
01 Arriving
The step marker follows your scroll through the first visit.
Entry is step-free via the ramp at the main door on Maitland Road, with a bus stop directly outside. Reception will confirm your details and any health fund or Medicare information. Bring a list of your medications and tell us about any heart condition, immune condition or pregnancy.
Your dentist asks when the pain started, what provokes it and how long it lasts, then tests the tooth with cold and with pressure and examines the surrounding gum. Those responses tell us whether the pulp is inflamed, dead, or healthy with the problem lying elsewhere.
A digital X-ray shows the number and curvature of the roots and whether bone at the root tip has been lost. You will see the image and hear what it shows, including anything we cannot determine from it.
You leave with a written, itemised estimate covering the number of appointments, the fee, your expected health-fund rebate and the gap payable, together with the alternatives if you would prefer not to proceed. Payment plan options are discussed at this appointment, not later.
Where a tooth is acutely painful, the first appointment may also include opening the tooth to relieve pressure and placing a dressing. That step alone usually settles the pain substantially within a day or two.
05Visit by visit
A typical molar course runs as below. Front teeth are often shorter. Your written plan states what applies to your tooth.
| Visit | What happens | What to expect afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| One | Examination, testing, X-ray, written estimate. Emergency pressure relief if required. | Usually no change, or marked easing of pain if the tooth was opened. |
| Two | Anaesthetic, access through the crown, removal of the infected pulp, irrigation and disinfection, canals shaped and measured to working length. Antibacterial dressing placed, temporary filling. | Tenderness on biting for a few days. Avoid hard foods on that side. Telephone us if the temporary filling comes out. |
| Three | Canals checked, filled with gutta-percha and sealed. Permanent filling closes the access opening. | Mild soreness settling over several days. The tooth is now sealed but not yet protected. |
| Four | Crown preparation on back teeth, in nearly every case. Impressions or a digital scan are taken and a temporary crown is placed. | Avoid sticky foods on that side, and do not floss around the temporary crown. |
| Five | The permanent crown is fitted and adjusted to your bite. | Normal chewing resumes. The crown is what protects the tooth against fracture. |
| Review | Assessment at your routine check-up, with an X-ray to follow healing at the root tip. | Healing at the root tip is gradual and is monitored over months rather than weeks. |
Accurate working length in visit two matters more than any other single technical factor: the seal must reach the root tip and stop there.

08The honest comparison
We will tell you when extraction is the better clinical decision, and we would rather do that than start treatment unlikely to succeed. Removal generally makes more sense where the root is fractured vertically, where too little tooth structure remains to rebuild, or where gum disease has already taken the supporting bone.
For reasons that are practical rather than sentimental. Your dentist will give you a written estimate for each option so that you can weigh them yourself.
It is held by a ligament that lets you judge bite force, which no replacement fully reproduces.
The root continues loading the bone that supports it. Once a tooth is removed, that bone begins to resorb.
A gap allows neighbouring teeth to tilt and the opposing tooth to over-erupt, which changes the bite.
Replacing a tooth with an implant or bridge generally costs more in total and takes several months rather than several weeks.
Treatment and removal are both quoted in writing, so the comparison is yours to make rather than ours to assert.
09Aftercare
Three stages, from the drive home to the check-ups that follow.
Numbness fades over two to four hours. Do not chew on that side until sensation has fully returned, as it is easy to bite your cheek or lip without feeling it. Tenderness on biting over the first few days is expected and settles; over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the packaging is usually sufficient.
A temporary filling caps the tooth. Keep hard and sticky foods off that side, do not floss around a temporary crown, and telephone us the same day if it comes out rather than waiting, because an open canal can be reinfected.
Brush and floss it as you would any other tooth. It no longer has a nerve, so it cannot warn you with pain if decay develops beneath a crown; routine examinations are how that is found.
You should not have lingering pain once treatment is complete. Persistent pain can indicate a canal that was not located. Tell us, and we will re-examine the tooth or refer you to an endodontist.
10Fees
We do not publish a price for root canal treatment. The cost depends on the tooth, and a figure quoted in advance would rarely match what you actually pay. You receive a written, itemised estimate at your assessment, before you consent to anything.

Tell us when you book. We allocate a longer appointment, explain each step before it happens and agree a hand signal so you can stop at any point. This is a scheduling decision rather than a marketing statement, and it is the reason booking staff ask.
Most patients do. Local anaesthetic does not affect your ability to drive or work, though your lip and tongue stay numb for two to four hours, which makes eating and speaking awkward for a while.
Almost certainly, yes. Pain fading usually means the nerve has died rather than that the infection has cleared, and the infection normally continues into the surrounding bone. Have the tooth examined even though it no longer hurts.
On a back tooth we recommend one in almost every case. Removing the pulp leaves the tooth more brittle under chewing load, and a crowned root-treated tooth generally lasts longer. Deferring the crown is the most common reason a successful root canal is later lost to fracture.
Outcomes vary between patients. With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and a protective crown, many treated teeth remain in function for a long period. Your dentist will discuss the likely outlook for your particular tooth.
Children's teeth are treated using methods suited to baby teeth and to adult teeth that are still developing, which differ from adult root canal treatment. Eligible children aged 2 to 17 may be covered under the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Most extras policies contribute toward endodontic treatment, with the amount depending on your level of cover and remaining annual limit. We are preferred providers for HCF and CBHS, and we claim on site for all health funds through HICAPS so you pay only the gap.
Some teeth have unusual anatomy, calcified canals or an additional canal that does not respond to routine treatment. Where that occurs we arrange referral to an endodontist rather than continuing regardless.
The infection does not resolve on its own. It progresses through the root tip into the jawbone, forming an abscess that destroys bone and eventually costs you the tooth. In rare cases infection spreads into the tissues of the face and neck, which is why facial swelling is always treated as urgent.
Save the tooth
while there is still tooth to save.
A tooth that throbs, reacts to hot drinks, hurts when you bite or has darkened is telling you something. The earlier it is examined, the more of it remains to rebuild. Book an assessment at Mayfield Dental Care and your dentist will review the X-ray with you, explain what is happening, and provide a written estimate before anything begins.
