The technology
AIR-FLOW® is a professional cleaning technology developed by EMS, a Swiss company that specialises in preventive dental equipment. It uses a controlled stream of air, warm water and a very fine powder to clean the surfaces of the teeth and the areas around the gums.
The fine spray is directed at the tooth surface by a small handpiece. It lifts soft deposits such as plaque and biofilm and rinses them away, without the need for a rubber cup and gritty paste. Because the spray is very fine, it can clean between teeth, along the gumline and around fillings, crowns, implants and braces.
A gentle suction tip removes the water and powder as your clinician works, so your mouth does not fill with fluid during the clean.
EMS designs AIR-FLOW® to be gentle on tooth enamel and the gums while removing soft deposits efficiently. AIR-FLOW® is used for plaque, biofilm and surface stains. Where hard deposits such as tartar are present, your clinician may also use a fine ultrasonic instrument to remove them before or after the AIR-FLOW® step.
A traditional polish uses a spinning rubber cup and a paste that is spread across each tooth. This works well on the flat surfaces of the teeth, but it can be harder to clean the narrow spaces between teeth and the edges of dental work. AIR-FLOW® replaces this step with a fine, warm spray. Many patients find it more comfortable, and it does not leave a gritty paste behind.
Four focus areas
For Newcastle patients, AIR-FLOW® is usually provided as part of a professional clean. It focuses on four main areas.
Biofilm is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria that forms on the teeth every day. It is the main cause of tooth decay and gum inflammation. AIR-FLOW® is designed to remove it from tooth surfaces, between teeth and along the gumline.
Plaque that is not removed can harden into tartar within a few days. Once tartar forms, it cannot be removed with a toothbrush and needs professional cleaning. Removing plaque regularly helps keep tartar build-up under control.
Coffee, tea, red wine and some foods can leave brown or yellow marks on the outer surface of the teeth. AIR-FLOW® can remove many of these surface stains during your clean.
The final result is a clean, smooth tooth surface. Because no paste is used, there is no gritty feeling afterwards, and smoother surfaces make it harder for new plaque to stick.
Plaque and biofilm
Dental biofilm is an organised community of bacteria that attaches to the teeth and is protected by a sticky layer. It can be difficult to see, especially in the early stages. Your clinician may use a disclosing solution, which temporarily colours the biofilm so it is clear exactly where cleaning is needed. The colour is removed during your clean.
Even with careful brushing and flossing, biofilm can build up in areas that are hard to reach, such as behind the back teeth, around crowns and under the edges of orthodontic wires. If it stays in place, it can lead to bleeding gums, gum disease and decay. Regular professional removal supports healthy gums and helps you keep on top of your home care.
Guided Biofilm Therapy is a cleaning approach developed by EMS in which AIR-FLOW® is a key step. It involves making biofilm visible, removing it gently, removing any remaining hard deposits and finishing with personalised advice. Showing you where biofilm collects makes it easier to improve your brushing and cleaning between teeth at home.
Surface stains
Coffee is one of the most common causes of surface staining. Stains often collect between the teeth and close to the gumline, where a toothbrush has trouble reaching. AIR-FLOW® can lift many of these stains during your clean. Rinsing your mouth with water after your coffee can help reduce new staining.
Black tea in particular can leave a darker surface stain over time. Regular tea drinkers often notice the build-up gradually, and AIR-FLOW® can help remove it and restore a cleaner appearance to the tooth surface.
It is important to know what AIR-FLOW® can and cannot do. It removes stains that sit on the surface of the teeth, but it does not change the natural colour of the teeth underneath. If you would like a lighter shade overall, our team can talk to you about teeth whitening, which is available at all three of our Newcastle clinics.
What it offers
The warm, fine spray is comfortable for many patients, including people who find the vibration or paste of traditional polishing unpleasant. If you have sensitive teeth, let your clinician know and they can adjust the treatment.
AIR-FLOW® is designed specifically to remove soft deposits from tooth surfaces and along the gumline, which are the deposits most closely linked to decay and gum inflammation.
The spray can reach between teeth and around crowns, bridges, implants and orthodontic appliances. These are the areas where plaque often builds up and where a polishing cup is least effective.
Many patients notice their teeth feel smooth and fresh after an AIR-FLOW® clean, which can be a good motivation to keep up a regular home care routine.

AIR-FLOW® can suit coffee and tea drinkers and anyone with surface staining who would like a cleaner appearance without changing the natural shade of their teeth.
It can be helpful for patients who find certain areas hard to keep clean, including people with crowns, bridges, implants, or braces and other orthodontic appliances.

Your appointment
A typical AIR-FLOW® clean follows these steps. Your clinician will explain each one as they go.
We check your teeth and gums, ask about any concerns and note any areas that need extra attention.
Biofilm may be made visible with a disclosing solution and is then removed with AIR-FLOW®. You may be given protective glasses to wear during this step.
Any hard tartar is removed with a fine ultrasonic instrument if needed, and your teeth are left clean and smooth.
We show you the areas where plaque tends to collect in your mouth and recommend practical home care, such as the right toothbrush, interdental brushes or floss, and a fluoride toothpaste.
