Serving Cardiff families since 2016
An infected tooth is not automatically a lost tooth. Root canal treatment removes the infection from inside the tooth, settles the pain it has been causing, and aims to keep the tooth working in your mouth. Our Newcastle Street clinic continues a dental practice that has served Cardiff families since 2016, and root canal treatment in Cardiff is routine work here.

Cardiff · your written estimate
Itemised, in writing, and handed to you at the assessment — before you consent to anything.
We do not publish a set price, because no two teeth are the same. A crown, where we recommend one, is quoted separately and planned in from the outset.
Preferred provider for HCF, Westfund and CBHS. All health funds welcome, and the smile.com.au dental plan is accepted.
01Straight answers
Root canal treatment in Cardiff is provided at MS Dental Cardiff, 20 Newcastle Street, Cardiff NSW 2285, at the Myall Road roundabout. Phone (02) 4954 7722. Root canal appointments run Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.30pm, and Saturday 9.00am to 4.00pm.
It removes the infected or inflamed pulp from the hollow centre of the tooth, disinfects and shapes the canal system, then seals it so bacteria cannot re-establish. The outer tooth stays in place and continues to function. Dentists call it endodontic treatment.
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic first, and your dentist checks that it is numb before starting. Patients commonly tell us the appointment itself was easier than the toothache that brought them in. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
Usually two to three appointments of 45 to 90 minutes, plus a separate visit to fit a crown on a back tooth. Treatment on a single-canal front tooth can sometimes be completed in one longer visit. Your written plan states the expected number in advance.
The fee depends on which tooth is involved, how many canals it has, how those canals are shaped, and whether a post and crown are needed. We do not publish a figure, because a published figure would rarely match your tooth. You receive a written estimate first.
02How it starts
Every tooth has a soft core called the dental pulp, holding the nerve and blood supply. Once bacteria reach it, the pulp cannot heal itself inside a sealed tooth. These are the routes bacteria usually take.
Understanding these causes can help you take preventative measures, like maintaining good oral hygiene and being careful with your teeth during activities.

!When we say no
There are cases where extraction is the better clinical decision, and we will say so plainly when it applies. A tooth split vertically through the root, a tooth with too little structure remaining to rebuild, or significant bone loss around the root can all mean removal makes more sense.
We would rather give you an honest recommendation than proceed with treatment unlikely to succeed.
03Symptoms
If any of the following applies to you, telephone the Cardiff clinic and book an assessment.
The most telltale sign of needing a root canal is severe tooth pain that does not go away. This pain may:
While brief sensitivity is normal, sensitivity lasting more than a few seconds after the hot or cold is removed often indicates nerve damage or infection. You might notice:
A tooth that becomes noticeably darker, grey or yellow compared with your other teeth may indicate pulp death or internal damage. This occurs when:
Swelling around a specific tooth can signal infection. Look for:
Facial swelling is always treated as urgent. Telephone us the same day.
Even small chips or cracks can expose the pulp to bacteria, leading to infection. Trauma from:
Any of these can damage the tooth structure and make root canal treatment necessary.
An infected tooth may feel loose, because infection can soften the bone supporting it. If you notice:
Seek dental care at our Cardiff clinic promptly.
Facial or gum swelling should always be treated as urgent. Telephone the clinic the same day and tell reception what you are experiencing.
Call (02) 4954 772204Scheduling
Root canal treatment in Cardiff is not a single appointment, and that is the part patients find hardest to arrange. This section exists because the Cardiff clinic is set up to make the scheduling manageable.
Cardiff runs a three-dentist roster across the week. In practice this means a shorter wait between the stages of your treatment, and a better chance of an urgent slot when a temporary filling fails or pain flares between visits.
Depth to the root tip, canal anatomy and how the tooth behaved under anaesthetic are all things your dentist learns during the first appointment. We book your follow-up visits with that same dentist rather than whoever is available, because that knowledge does not transfer well through notes alone.
Where treatment runs across appointments, the fees fall across those appointments as well. Combined with a payment plan, this is often what makes saving a tooth practical rather than theoretical.
05Start to finish
At MS Dental Cardiff we follow the same sequence for every patient, so you always know what happens next and what it will cost before it happens.
● Step 1 of 7
01 Consultation and diagnosis
The step marker follows your scroll through the seven stages.
At MS Dental Cardiff we begin with a comprehensive examination, including:
Before anything begins you receive a written plan. It sets out the number of appointments, the fee, your expected health-fund rebate and the gap you will pay. We discuss payment plan options at the same time. No treatment begins without your informed consent.
We administer local anaesthetic to ensure you are completely comfortable. For anxious patients, we offer sedation dentistry options to help you relax during treatment.
We place a rubber dam around the tooth to keep it dry and clean. We then create a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
Using specialised instruments, we carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp, clean the root canals, and shape them for filling. This step is meticulous and crucial for treatment success.
To protect the inside of the tooth and prevent further infection, the root canals are filled and the pulp chamber is sealed. A post may be inserted inside the tooth if it lacks enough structure to support an artificial crown.
After root canal treatment, your dentist may recommend that the tooth requires an artificial artificial crown. As an endodontically treated tooth may have a higher risk of fracture without that protection, one should be fitted soon after treatment. Typically made of porcelain or gold, the crown is needed to:

06Your clinicians
All clinicians below are registered with the Dental Board of Australia through AHPRA and work to the same clinical protocols across our three clinics.
Principal Dentist
The standards and protocols the Cardiff team works to are set under her leadership.
Dr Shah founded MS Dental at Cardiff and leads the clinical team across all three clinics. She completed her dental degree in 2006, moved to Australia in February 2007, sat her Australian Dental Council examinations, and worked across private practices in rural New South Wales and Sydney before establishing the practice.
She treats patients at our Fletcher clinic, so your own appointments here are with the Cardiff dentists named below.
Dr Ell graduated from the University of Sydney in 1981 and trained in the dental department at Royal Newcastle Hospital. He practised in Cardiff for many years, continuing a dental practice his family established in the suburb, and joined MS Dental in 2017. He has followed a great many of the teeth he sees today for decades.

Dr Patel joined MS Dental in 2016 and practises at the Cardiff clinic. She worked across several private practices before settling in Australia, and is known among our patients for setting out each option plainly before anything is decided.

Dr Nick Chen joined the MS Dental family in 2025 and cares for patients at our dentist in Mayfield as well as the Cardiff clinic. He completed his studies in Adelaide and built his experience across rural South Australia and the Central Coast. Nick takes the time to get to know each patient, and his friendly, easy-going manner helps nervous visitors feel at home.

08The decision
Root canal treatment in Cardiff is not always the right answer. Extraction is sometimes the better clinical choice, and we will tell you when it is. The decision turns on four questions, which your dentist works through with you at the assessment.
Where they point to treatment, that is usually both the better clinical and the better financial outcome. Where they do not, we will say so.
Dental implants· Bridges· Dentures· Wisdom teeth and extractions
09Aftercare
Three stages, from the drive home to the check-ups that follow.
Numbness fades over two to four hours. Avoid chewing on that side until sensation returns fully. Mild tenderness on biting is expected and settles within days; over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the packaging is usually enough.
A temporary filling caps the tooth. Keep hard and sticky foods off that side. If the temporary filling comes out, telephone the clinic rather than waiting for the next visit, because an open canal can be reinfected.
Brush and floss the tooth as you would any other. A root-treated tooth has no nerve, so it cannot warn you with pain if decay develops under a crown. Routine check-ups are how that is detected.
Lingering pain after treatment is complete is not something to tolerate. It can indicate a canal that was not located. Tell us, and we will re-examine the tooth or refer you to an endodontist if needed.
10Estimates and payment
We do not publish a price for root canal treatment in Cardiff. No two teeth are the same, and a figure quoted in advance would rarely match what you actually pay. You receive a written, itemised estimate at your assessment, before you consent to anything.

13FAQ
Yes, at our Cardiff practice only. Root canal appointments are booked Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.30pm, or Saturday 9.00am to 4.00pm. Telephone (02) 4954 7722 and reception will find a time that fits around your work.
That is how we schedule it. Your dentist learns your canal anatomy at the first appointment, and we book the rest of the course with them. If illness or leave makes that impossible, we will tell you beforehand rather than at the door.
Not currently. If you need step-free access, our Mayfield clinic has ramp access at the main door and Fletcher has ramp access with an accessible parking space. Telephone (02) 4954 7722 and we will arrange the appointment at whichever clinic suits you.
Telephone the clinic that day. An open canal can be reinfected, which may add a visit to your treatment. Do not wait for the scheduled appointment, and do not attempt to seal it yourself.
On back teeth, in almost every case. Removing the pulp leaves the tooth more brittle and more likely to crack under chewing load. A crowned root-treated tooth generally lasts longer, and fitting one protects what you have already spent on the treatment.
Outcomes vary between patients. With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and a protective crown, many treated teeth remain in function for a long period. Your dentist will discuss the likely outlook for your particular tooth.
Same-day care is subject to availability and clinical urgency. Telephone (02) 4954 7722 early and tell reception that you have significant pain or facial swelling. Facial swelling is always treated as urgent.
Some teeth have unusual anatomy, calcified canals or an extra canal that does not respond to routine treatment. Where that occurs, we arrange a referral to an endodontist rather than continuing regardless.
Most extras policies contribute toward endodontic treatment, with the amount depending on your level of cover and your remaining annual limit. We are preferred providers for HCF, Westfund and CBHS, and we claim on site through HICAPS for all health funds, so you pay only the gap.
Treating an active dental infection during pregnancy is generally considered safer than leaving it untreated. Tell us that you are pregnant and how far along you are, and we will adjust positioning, shielding and timing. Please bring any advice from your obstetrician or general practitioner.
The infection does not resolve on its own. It progresses through the root tip into the surrounding bone, forming an abscess that destroys bone and eventually costs you the tooth. In rare cases infection spreads into the tissues of the face and neck.
If a tooth throbs, reacts to hot drinks, hurts on biting or looks greyer than the rest, the sooner it is examined the more of it there is to save. Book an assessment for root canal treatment in Cardiff at MS Dental. Your dentist will review the X-ray with you, explain what is happening, and give you a written estimate before anything begins.
