Dental emergency first aid
While you sort out your appointment, these simple steps might help. They won’t replace proper treatment - so please still ring us.
Knocked-out tooth
Hold the tooth by the crown - the top part - never the root. If you can, gently place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in milk. Australian health authorities like healthdirect say a knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance when it’s put back within about an hour, so call us straight away. For children under six, head to your nearest children’s hospital.
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salty water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging or by your pharmacist. If there’s swelling, hold a cold compress to the outside of your cheek and book an appointment quickly.
Broken or chipped tooth
Keep any fragments. Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress if it swells. Try not to chew on that side until you’re seen.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the restoration safe and bring it with you to your appointment. Avoid chewing on that side and book in soon so we can assess the area and determine whether the filling needs to be replaced.
Facial swelling
Swelling can mean infection and needs checking fast. Call us as soon as you can. If it’s severe or affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.
